When Stephen King endorses your film in a trailer, you listen. When he compares it to two of the most iconic horror films ever made in the same breath, you clear your October calendar immediately. Jordan Downey has built a quiet, dedicated following through The Head Hunter, one of the most inventive low-budget monster films of recent years, and The Cycle looks like the film that announces him to the mainstream horror audience he deserves. Deborah Ann Woll has been one of the genre’s most compelling presences since True Blood and Daredevil, and her first true leading horror role is long overdue. October 23 on Shudder cannot come fast enough.

Shudder just dropped the official trailer for The Cycle, arriving on the platform on October 23. The trailer features two endorsements that immediately establish the film’s horror credentials, Stephen King calls it “The Thing meets Silence of the Lambs, a terrific fright flick,” while Masters of Horror director Mick Garris describes it as “an over-the-top celebration of practical effects.” Those two comparisons alone, Carpenter’s shapeshifting paranoia classic and Demme’s psychological procedural, tell you everything you need to know about the film’s ambitions.
The Story
Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood, Daredevil) plays a woman shocked to discover that a body recently found at the scene of a horrific crime is her estranged father, missing for thirty-six years. Determined to understand what happened to him and what he was involved in, she begins unraveling his dark past. What she uncovers is a supernatural nightmare. Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice, Villains) also stars.
The Team
Jordan Downey writes and directs alongside his longtime collaborator Kevin Stewart, the same duo behind The Head Hunter. The film world-premiered in competition at Fantastic Fest 2026 in September, where Bloody Disgusting’s own Meagan Navarro gave it a strong review, “Downey adds new wrinkles and lore to my personal favourite variety of movie monsters, surprising with an inventive twist to a familiar staple. It may take a while for The Cycle to fully show its hand, but it’s more than worth the wait.” The review also praised the practical creature feature elements, which come to the fore in the film’s second half.
