The final chapter of the recent The Strangers trilogy has debuted in theaters, but not with the commercial strength many fans hoped for. According to early box office tracking, The Strangers: Chapter 3 earned approximately $3.5 million in its opening weekend, the lowest opening for any film in the franchise to date.
Released theatrically across 2,565 theaters nationwide, Chapter 3 launched in eighth place at the U.S. box office, outpaced not only by other recent horror fare like Send Help, Iron Lung, and Dracula, but also by broad mainstream releases outside the genre.
Following director Renny Harlin’s controversial trilogy approach, with all three films shot back-to-back, The Strangers: Chapter 3 aimed to provide a “full-circle reckoning” for hero Maya (played by Madelaine Petsch) as she faced familiar masked killers one last time.
