Abigail (2024)

3

Vampires, kidnappers, and buckets of blood—what’s not to love? Abigail (2024), the latest horror-thriller from Radio Silence (Ready or Not, Scream 2022), takes a classic monster myth and gives it a brutal, darkly funny twist. If you’re into stylish carnage and unexpected horror-comedy moments, you’re in for a treat—or should we say, a bite?

The Premise: Kidnapping Gone Wrong… Very Wrong

The story kicks off with a seemingly foolproof crime. A group of misfit criminals, played by an A-list ensemble (Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, and the late Angus Cloud), kidnap 12-year-old ballerina Abigail (Alisha Weir), the daughter of a powerful figure. The plan? Hold her hostage in a secluded mansion and cash in a massive ransom.

Simple, right?

Not so much. Turns out, Abigail isn’t your typical scared little girl—she’s something much worse. As night falls, the kidnappers quickly realize they’re the ones being hunted, and their getaway plan spirals into a blood-soaked nightmare.

Blood, Humor & A Sinister Ballet Routine

From the get-go, Abigail delivers the signature Radio Silence energy: a mix of intense horror, witty banter, and over-the-top gore. The film’s eerie, gothic mansion setting sets the perfect stage for a claustrophobic, high-stakes game of survival.

Alisha Weir is an absolute standout as Abigail. Her transformation from a seemingly innocent captive to a full-blown, nightmare-inducing predator is jaw-dropping. One minute, she’s a fragile little girl, the next, she’s gracefully tearing through her captors like a dancer in a macabre performance.

And speaking of the captors—while their chemistry and dark humor add some levity, their characters do lean a bit on familiar horror tropes. Some are more developed than others, but let’s be honest—we’re mainly here for the carnage, and they deliver.

Kills, Carnage & That One Scene You Won’t Forget

If you’re here for the gore, Abigail does not disappoint. The kills are brutal, creative, and, at times, downright shocking. Practical effects shine, giving every blood-soaked moment a visceral, in-your-face quality.

One scene involving a cheese grater (yes, you read that right) is particularly nasty—and will have you thinking twice about what’s in your kitchen drawers.

And let’s not forget the ballet-themed kills—elegant yet horrifying, making Abigail one of the most unique horror antagonists in recent memory.

The Verdict: Worth the Bite?

What Works:
Alisha Weir’s performance—chilling, mesmerizing, and unforgettable.
Killer atmosphere—the gothic mansion setting adds to the tension.
Horror meets humor—darkly comedic moments make the carnage even more entertaining.
Gore galore—this movie does not hold back on the bloodbath.

What Falls Short:
Some predictable horror tropes—not all kidnappers are equally interesting.
A few pacing issues—some moments drag, affecting tension.
Dialogue could be sharper—some lines don’t land as well as they could.

Final Rating: 3/5 – Fun, Frightening & Ferocious

While Abigail doesn’t reinvent the horror genre, it delivers a wildly entertaining, blood-drenched ride with a fresh take on vampire mythology. If you loved Ready or Not or Scream (2022), you’ll have a blast watching this one—just maybe not right before bedtime.
