The Conjuring Universe isn’t slowing down, it’s going all the way back to the beginning.
The Conjuring: Last Rites became the highest-grossing film in the franchise last year at over $499 million worldwide, pushing the entire Conjuring Universe past $2.7 billion globally. That’s not a franchise winding down. That’s a franchise with a decade of runway left, and First Communion is its next step. The film is the next entry in the Conjuring Universe and heads to theaters on September 10, 2027.
The Young Warrens
Leading the film are Garrett Wareing (Ransom Canyon, The Long Walk) and Amanda Fix (Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the upcoming Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen) as young Ed and Lorraine Warren, the married paranormal investigators played throughout the franchise by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. It’s worth noting that Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor had already played young versions of the Warrens in Last Rites, making this a fresh recast rather than a continuation of that portrayal. Whether Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga appear in the film at all has not been confirmed.
The Supporting Cast
Three new cast members just joined, Charles Parnell (Top Gun: Maverick), Marta Kessler (The Santa Clauses), and Caleb Dolden (Teacup) have all signed on. They join previously announced Matthias Schweighöfer (Oppenheimer, Army of Thieves), whose role remains undisclosed.
The Creative Team
Rodrigue Huart directs from a screenplay by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, the writers behind The Nun II and The Conjuring: Last Rites. New Line hired Huart directly off a short film. Notably, Huart is simultaneously developing a remake of the legendary Spanish cult horror Who Can Kill a Child? making him one of the more intriguing new voices in the genre right now. Peter Safran produces for the Safran Company, with John Rickard and Natalia Safran executive producing alongside Romel Adam.
Plot Details
Under wraps, entirely. The title First Communion suggests the film will explore the Warrens’ earliest encounters with the paranormal, likely before the events of the 2013 original. Beyond that, New Line isn’t saying anything. Given how tight the secrecy has been on every Conjuring entry, that’s unlikely to change until a trailer arrives.
The Conjuring: First Communion opens in theaters September 10, 2027.
