Godzilla Minus Zero Releases New Trailer Ahead of November Theatrical Debut

Toho has released a new official trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, the upcoming sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One. Takashi Yamazaki returns as director, screenwriter, and visual effects supervisor.

The new film takes place in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One. Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, while Minami Hamabe reprises her role as Noriko Shikishima.

Godzilla Returns in 1949

The official story details place the sequel during Japan’s postwar recovery. The country has spent two years rebuilding after the destruction caused by the war and Godzilla.

That recovery is disrupted when a new threat emerges. The official synopsis states that the latest crisis threatens the fragile peace Japan has managed to establish.

The new trailer also shows Godzilla returning after the events of the previous film. It features footage of a new operation intended to confront the monster, along with several large-scale encounters.

Returning Cast and New Characters

Several members of the Godzilla Minus One cast are returning for the sequel.

Hidetaka Yoshioka reprises his role as Kenji Noda, who now serves as director of the Disaster Response Bureau. Yuki Yamada returns as Shiro Mizushima, while Kuranosuke Sasaki reprises his role as Seiji Akitsu.

Sakura Ando also returns as Sumiko Ota, and Miou Tanaka reprises his role as Tatsuo Hotta.

The sequel introduces several new characters as well. Min Tanaka plays biologist Kanji Murakami. Masami Nagasawa appears as weather forecaster Makoto Aoyama, while Jun Kunimura plays Dr. Ogata. Ko Maehara also joins the cast as Akira Hagiwara.

First Japanese Production Filmed for IMAX

Godzilla Minus Zero was filmed entirely in Japan and is the first Japanese production filmed specifically for IMAX. The production used high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, with the imagery and sound optimized for IMAX presentation.

Yamazaki is returning to all three of his major roles from Godzilla Minus One, director, screenwriter, and visual effects lead.

Release Date

Godzilla Minus Zero will premiere in Japan on November 3, 2026, which is also Godzilla Day. GKIDS will release the film in North American theaters on November 6, 2026

Before its theatrical release, the film will have its world premiere as a Spotlight Gala selection at the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26

The official synopsis concludes with the line, “There is no third time. Everything ends here.”
