Banjong Pisanthanakun, the Thai filmmaker behind Shutter and The Medium, is heading to TIFF with his next nightmare, and the first trailer just arrived.
Inherit premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. The film stars Davika Hoorne (A Useful Ghost) in what TIFF is calling her most magnetic performance yet. The trailer leans heavily into psychological tension and slow-burn atmosphere, exactly what you’d expect from a director who made The Medium one of the most genuinely disturbing possession films of the last decade.
Woranart (Hoorne) returns home after 50 years away, without a single sign of aging. The reason quickly becomes clear: a centipede spirit possesses her body and sets its sights on a new host, Woranart’s 18-year-old granddaughter, Oui (Baipor Thitiya Jirapornsilp). The cast also includes Sinjai Plengpanich, Trin Settachoke, and Warattaya Nilkuha.
Pisanthanakun directs from a script he co-wrote with Thamsatid Charoenrittichai and Chantavit Dhanasevi, adapting the Thai horror novel Tayard Asoon. Thailand’s most successful film studio, GDH 559, produces, the same studio behind The Medium.
The director has spoken about this story following him since childhood. He told Screen Daily: “At its core, it’s a story about power, legacy, and the darkness we inherit. It’s a Thai story but told with the scale and sophistication that international audiences crave.” Notably, the Parasite producer has also boarded the film, a significant credibility signal for its international ambitions.
TIFF’s Midnight Madness lineup announcement comes tomorrow, where Inherit is widely expected to feature. Last year, the same section launched Obsession, which has since crossed $400 million worldwide.
