Robert Eggers has never done things the conventional way. Werwulf is making that clear at every turn, right down to how you can see it. Each Eggers film has declared something about what cinema can do. The Witch proved folk horror could genuinely terrify. The Lighthouse showed two men could carry a black-and-white nightmare entirely alone. The Northman brought Viking epics to mainstream audiences. Nosferatu, furthermore, became one of 2024’s defining horror events. Werwulf is his darkest film yet by his own description, and screening it in 35mm on Christmas Day is the perfect match for a film pulled from the soil of 13th-century England.

The Film
Set in 13th-century England and written by Robert Eggers and Sjón, the film’s dialogue is in Middle English. Dialect coach William Conacher altered the pronunciation of many words and phrases to make it more comprehensible to modern audiences. Eleanor Baker and Daniel Wakelin, Middle English scholars at Oxford University, helped make the dialogue more period-accurate. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson star. Focus Features, Working Title Films, and Maiden Voyage Pictures produce. Universal Studios releases the film in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2027.
The Marketing Campaign
The marketing campaign has been running an ARG, an alternate reality game, asking fans to point their phones at the real full moon to unlock clues. The Snapchat lens carries the film’s eerie aesthetic, opening with the Werwulf title in blackletter type alongside the promise that the film arrives only in theaters this Christmas. With one more full moon to go before the prize is unveiled, the campaign is keeping Werwulf howling in the conversation right up until its holiday release.
