A fresh trailer has arrived for the upcoming 4K restoration of Ken Russell’s notorious 1971 film The Devils. The re-release marks the launch project for Clockwork, Warner Bros.’ brand-new specialty label.
Based on Aldous Huxley’s book The Devils of Loudun and its stage adaptation, the period drama is set in 17th-century France. Oliver Reed stars as Urbain Grandier, a charismatic priest caught in a political power struggle. Vanessa Redgrave plays Sister Jeanne, a repressed abbess whose intense fixation leads to false accusations of demonic possession.
For decades, the film has remained largely unavailable and heavily censored because of its provocative sexual and religious imagery. Now, the new 4K presentation uses the original camera negatives to assemble the director’s cut precisely as Ken Russell intended.
The MPA has officially given the uncensored cut an NC-17 rating for graphic nudity and sexual content. As a result, it becomes the first film in Warner Bros.’ 103-year history to receive an official release under that rating.
The restored version will begin a limited, one-week theatrical run in North America on October 16, 2026. It will then arrive in the U.K. and Ireland on October 30, 2026, in partnership with the British Film Institute.
