Horror Reigns This Labor Day: Weapons Still on Top, The Strangers: Chapter 2 Ready to Strike

As summer’s terror fades into fall, horror continues to claim the spotlight, with a triumphant legacy shark, an unexpected original hit, and a chilling sequel emerging from the shadows.

Late August marked a staggering return to Amity Island when Jaws splashed back into theaters for its 50th anniversary. Available in IMAX and 4DX formats starting August 29, Spielberg’s shark epic managed to ambush the box office once again, earning approximately $8.1 million during Labor Day weekend, securing second place and demonstrating that terror still resonates decades later. Exclusive SteelBook 4K editions, themed screenings, and nostalgia-driven merchandising only deepened its cultural bite.

At the same time, a new thriller flexed its muscles at the box office: Zach Cregger’s Weapons clawed back into the top spot over Labor Day weekend with $10.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $132.4 million and global earnings to over $234 million. The non-franchise hit delivered big on modern word-of-mouth power, retaking the throne after a brief bump from KPop Demon Hunters. Despite premium nostalgia dominating the headlines, Weapons proved that fresh horror could still dominate.

Meanwhile, the horror heat is far from over. The Strangers: Chapter 2, the latest in the revived masked-intruder franchise, will stalk the screen this fall. After its world premiere at Fantastic Fest, the sequel is set to open in U.S. theaters on September 26, 2025. Helmed by Renny Harlin and featuring Madelaine Petsch as the beleaguered survivor Maya, this chapter expands the mythology of horror lurking inside homes, invading hospitals, unraveling minds, and deepening nightly dread.

Together, these three films showcase the current landscape of horror: a mix of reimagining classics, pushing genre boundaries, and expanding terrifying franchises. From the deep-sea dread of Jaws to the unsettling unknown of Weapons, and the chilling familiarity of The Strangers: Chapter 2, horror fans are being spoiled with variety. If 2025 continues with this kind of momentum, it may well become one of the defining years for the genre.
