Netflix’s Sacrifice Reveals Anya Taylor-Joy as the Leader of a Violent Doomsday Cult

Netflix has released the first official look at Sacrifice, the upcoming thriller from filmmaker Romain Gavras, and the movie already looks completely unhinged in a way that feels very intentional. At the center of it all is Anya Taylor-Joy, playing the charismatic leader of a dangerous cult obsessed with preventing the end of the world through ritual sacrifice.

The story follows a luxury environmental gala attended by celebrities and wealthy elites that suddenly descends into chaos once the cult arrives. According to early plot details, the group believes an apocalyptic volcanic disaster is coming, and human sacrifice may be the only way to stop it.

The cast alone makes the project feel unusually ambitious for a streaming thriller. Alongside Taylor-Joy, the film stars Chris Evans, Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, John Malkovich, Sam Richardson, Ambika Mod, and Charli XCX. The combination sounds chaotic on paper, which honestly seems to match the tone the movie is aiming for.

Director Romain Gavras is known for intense and visually aggressive filmmaking, especially after Athena, and early reactions suggest Sacrifice continues that same style. Rather than leaning into straightforward horror, the movie appears to mix cult paranoia, satire, dark comedy, and social commentary into something deliberately excessive and unpredictable.

Chris Evans reportedly plays a fading movie star dealing with a personal crisis while attending the gala, only to find himself trapped once the cult’s plans begin unfolding. Meanwhile, Taylor-Joy’s role already looks like one of the most unsettling performances of her career so far, balancing manipulation, fanaticism, and eerie calmness.

The film originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before Netflix secured distribution rights. Early reactions were sharply divided, though even critics who disliked the film still praised its energy, visuals, and completely fearless commitment to chaos.

Movies about cults tend to become much more interesting when they stop trying to feel realistic and fully embrace the madness. Sacrifice already looks ready to do exactly that.
