Japanese Horror Film Exit 8 Gets Official PG-13 Rating Ahead of April Release

A new psychological horror film is on the way, and audiences now have a clearer idea of what to expect. The upcoming Japanese horror movie Exit 8 has officially received a PG-13 rating from the MPA, signaling a tense but accessible theatrical experience.

The film is rated for “some bloody images and terror,” suggesting a focus on atmosphere and psychological tension rather than extreme gore.

Based on the popular indie video game created by Kotake Create, Exit 8 follows a man trapped inside an endless, sterile subway passageway, where survival depends on carefully observing anomalies in his surroundings. If something seems off, he must turn back. If not, he continues forward in search of the mysterious Exit 8.

The film is directed by Genki Kawamura, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kentaro Hirase, and features a cast including Kazunari Ninomiya and Nana Komatsu.

Exit 8 is set to release in theaters on April 10, 2026, positioning it as one of the more intriguing psychological horror titles arriving this spring.

With liminal-space horror gaining traction thanks to projects like Backrooms, Exit 8 could tap into that same unsettling fear of the familiar turning strange.
