Nightborn Trailer Turns Motherhood Into a Terrifying Dark Fairy Tale

The director of Hatching is back with another monstrous child, and this time, Ron Weasley is the dad.

Shudder has released the first trailer for Nightborn, the sophomore feature from Finnish filmmaker Hanna Bergholm, co-written with Ilja Rautsi. The film world-premiered in competition at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival in February, where it scored a Golden Bear nomination, and now makes its North American premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival on July 22, before streaming exclusively on Shudder on July 31.

Saga (Seidi Haarla) and her British husband Jon (Rupert Grint) move into the remote Finnish forest home where Saga grew up, hoping to build the perfect family. The second their baby is born, Saga knows something is deeply, horribly wrong with her son. Everyone around her disagrees. Their marriage begins to crack, and Saga keeps digging.

The trailer leans hard into folk-horror dread and practical creature effects, with Bergholm once again blending emotional gut-punches with body horror, her signature move since Hatching. And the creature work is in exceptionally good hands- animatronics designer Gustav Hoegen (Star Wars, Andor, Prometheus) and two-time Oscar-nominated SFX makeup designer Conor O’Sullivan (The Dark Knight, Game of Thrones) are both on board.

The full cast includes Seidi Haarla, Rupert Grint, Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey, John Thomson, and Silvia Saloranta.

Nightborn hits Shudder on July 31.
