Adam Wingard is officially returning to horror in a big way.
After spending the last few years directing massive studio blockbusters like Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the filmmaker behind You’re Next and The Guest is heading back into brutal genre territory with his upcoming action-horror thriller Onslaught. This week, A24 officially confirmed that the film will hit theaters on September 4, 2026.
At the same time, horror fans attending screenings of Backrooms got an unexpected first look at the movie when A24 quietly debuted the trailer exclusively in theaters. While the footage has not been released online yet, early reactions describe it as an aggressive mix of explosive action, horror violence, military chaos, and the fast-paced energy that originally made Wingard a genre favorite.
The film follows a mother living in a trailer park whose life spirals into chaos after a dangerous supernatural threat escapes from a secret military facility. As mercenaries move in to contain the situation, she finds herself caught in the middle of a deadly nightmare.
The cast includes Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Michael Biehn, and UFC champion Alex Pereira, who reportedly plays a terrifying character known as “The Butcher.”
Onslaught feels like Wingard returning to the raw, chaotic filmmaking style that helped define modern horror in the 2010s. Early descriptions suggest the movie is far less concerned with giant franchise spectacle and much more focused on relentless action, violence, and survival horror tension.
With A24 continuing to build one of the most unpredictable horror lineups in the industry, Onslaught feels like one of the studio’s most interesting releases heading into the fall season.
