The official trailer for Other Mommy just dropped, and it is exactly the kind of October horror event that deserves your full attention.
Directed by Rob Savage (Host, The Boogeyman) and produced by James Wan alongside Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the film adapts Josh Malerman’s New York Times bestselling novel Incidents Around the House, the same author who gave us Bird Box. Universal releases it in theaters on October 9, 2026.
The story centres on a young girl named Bela who forms a bond with a sinister entity in her home, one that looks exactly like her own mother. Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain (It Chapter Two, The Eyes of Tammy Faye) plays both roles, Bela’s real mother and “Other Mommy,” the entity wearing her face. It’s a dual performance that demands she be warm and deeply wrong at the same time. The trailer suggests she nails both.
Jay Duplass (Transparent, Industry) plays Daddo, Bela’s father. Arabella Olivia Clark (The Housemaid, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) plays Bela. The supporting cast includes Dichen Lachman (Severance), Arian Moayed (Succession), and screen legend Karen Allen (Indiana Jones). The screenplay comes from Nathan Elston, a WGA Award winner who also wrote for the Emmy-winning Succession.
Two things make this one stand out. First, the pedigree, Savage, Wan, Malerman, Blumhouse Atomic Monster, and a cast anchored by an Oscar winner all pointing at the same October 9 target. Second, the central idea itself: a monster that wears your mother’s face and wants inside your heart. That’s not just scary. That’s deeply, specifically wrong in the best possible way.
Other Mommy opens in theaters October 9, 2026.
