George Romero invented the modern zombie film, full stop. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead didn’t just launch a genre. They defined it, shaped it, and gave it political teeth that most imitators have never matched. Twilight of the Dead positions itself as the final chapter in that legendary saga, built from a treatment Romero wrote before his 2017 death. The announcement that filming has wrapped marks one of the most significant milestones in zombie cinema in years. With Greg Nicotero handling makeup effects and a strong cast in place, this is one of the most anticipated horror productions of the next two years.
Deadline reports that production on Twilight of the Dead has officially completed. No release date has been set yet. The film now moves into post-production.
The Story
Twilight of the Dead is set on a decimated earth where the last remnants of humanity find themselves caught between warring factions and an evolving undead threat. The film draws directly from a treatment written by Romero before his death, positioning it as the concluding chapter of his legendary zombie franchise, following Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005), Diary of the Dead (2007), and Survival of the Dead (2009).
The Cast
Kate Beckinsale (Underworld) leads the film alongside Betty Gabriel (Get Out). The full cast also includes Abigail London and John D. Hickman (Becky). Beckinsale replaced Milla Jovovich, who was originally attached, when production was restructured in May 2026 with the Paz Brothers coming aboard as directors.
The Directors
The Paz Brothers, Doron and Yoav, take the helm. Their previous work includes Jeruzalem and The Golem, giving them a strong foundation in contained, atmospheric horror with international production sensibilities. In their joint statement, they describe the responsibility clearly, “Stepping into Romero’s world is the ultimate privilege for any genre filmmaker. This is more than a continuation; it’s a responsibility. We are committed to honoring his voice while delivering a visceral, terrifying, impactful experience for today’s audience that resonates beyond the screen.”
Greg Nicotero’s Involvement
The Walking Dead and Day of the Dead makeup effects legend Greg Nicotero handles the practical creature effects, a casting choice that carries enormous symbolic weight. Nicotero worked directly with Romero on Day of the Dead, Monkey Shines, and Land of the Dead. His involvement is as close to a guarantee of authentic Romero DNA as any living craftsperson can provide.
Magenta Light Studios (Strange Darling, Deep Water) holds North American distribution rights and will release the film in theaters across the US and Canada.
